Senior Mckayla Vasquez has been in band since her freshman year and due to her hard work she has been given the opportunity to be Drum major. Being social is a big part of being drum major but for Vasquez it is nothing short of fun.
“I’ve always loved the band itself and getting to meet new people and being able to talk to them and be personable with them is really fun for me, that’s like one of my favorite things, it’s just being able to talk to everyone freely without it being awkward in any way,” Vasquez said.
Band teacher Michael Austin chose Vasquez due to her determination, perseverance and previous leadership roles. All of her leadership roles have been a contributing factor to secure her spot as drum major.
“They have been apart of our leadership team previous to being a drum major, they have been a section leader of our woodwinds, they have been in the loading crew, and they have taken on other leadership roles in our band council and all of those things have contributed to them getting into the head position which is the biggest position we have as far as the leadership in band goes,” Austin said.
To be drum major comes with responsibilities that Vasquez must fulfill in order to be a role model for the band. As well as making sure everyone is on track so rehearsals can run smoothly.
”So I’m the time keeper of the band, I’m the person that everyone’s looking at during our shows, making sure that we stay on time. I’m a person that other leaders and students get to look up to as someone to help them out as a student and not as an instructor. I also act as some sort of stability making sure that we’re quiet when we need to be, so rehearsals can run as smoothly as possible,” Vasquez said.
