At the end of April, the brand new South Asian club held their first ever meeting during lunch. One of the club’s founders Iqbal Jahesh’s goal was to create an environment where struggling people can come together.
“The reason we started the club was to make a safe space for everyone and for them to have a place where they can ask for help if needed or they can help their peers with anything they need. Our club is mainly centered towards helping in school, not only culture based. As well as trying to support students that just came to this country with their assignments, class suggestions, and any other support they need,” Jahesh said.
The club’s turnout was impressive for their first meeting.
“I thought our first meeting was a huge success, we had a lot of people come out to the meeting and we were able to share our basic information about our club to everyone. I think we had upwards to twenty to thirty people in the meeting; huge success”, Gabriel Jesudasan said.
To attract new members both founders plan to express the club’s guidance and helpful resources to students, not just expanding on South Asian culture.
“We’re trying to show off the heritage, the culture, and the food,” Jesudasan said.
“We’re going to be doing activities such as assistance with classwork and exploring the culture a little more but it wouldn’t be mainly focused on just the culture,” Jahesh said.
