Interact club has recently picked up a new activity to assist the less fortunate.
“Right now, we have our menstrual hygiene pack project, so we’re making hygiene packs for women in Africa. We’re cutting the fabric ourselves and sewing it, and this is important since menstrual hygiene is a taboo subject in Africa. So we just want to give them the supplies that they need to take care of themselves safely and get the resources they need,” Club Founder Sophia Perez said
The club has been through lots of preparation for this project and is now in motion.
“We’ve wanted to do hygiene packs for a while but we didn’t know if it was local or international. The opportunity came to us when one of the Rotarians who sponsors our club came from Ethiopia, and he knows the impact that menstrual hygiene has on girls and their education there, and he came with us with the opportunity to make and sew these packs,” Perez said
“We’ve raised like $600. We’re sewing menstrual pads for women in Ethiopia and working with the Rotary Club of Roseville. We have different types of flannel and cloth and stuff that were just sewing towel into the middle. Our goal is to make like 200 packs total and ship them to Ethiopia,” Vice President Adeline Vigil said.
Interact club has done many similar projects like this one which gives them experience and knowledge to use for their next project.
“Every year we try to do a different kind of project. This year, our main focus has been the menstrual hygiene packs. We do other volunteer work throughout, like the Placer SPCA which we made blankets and treats for them. We do volunteer work for the fall festivals, and it’s a great way to get out in the community and do community service,” Perez said
“The splash bash is going to be May 14th, and we’re going to be dunking teachers again, and we want involvement in that because it’s going to be a big part of the shipping to Ethiopia for the pads, so it’s just really exciting,” Vigil said.
