Senior Matthew Ahwal enjoys handing out jolly ranchers every day to his friends and peers as it brings him delight.
“I started giving Jolly Ranchers out in 7th grade, but not the same way as I do now. It was pretty much to close friends, I didn’t share them with just anybody. Then COVID hit, so then in 8th grade that wasn’t really happening. And then around the second semester of Sophomore year, I started doing it here at Roseville High,” Ahwal said.
Many of his classmates love to see Matthew outside of their Peer Helping class, as it is his main place to hand them out.
“It’s a nice little like treat in the middle of the day I guess. Just get a little snack,” Alex Justman said.
“I get them like twice a day when we enter third period. He’ll just stand and open the door for us, have them out, and then when we’re going into the theater for Peer Helping, he has them out and holds the door open for us. I mean in second period towards the end I’m always like ‘Oh sweet, I get to get Jolly Ranchers from Matthew,’ and so when we get to third period he’s always already there, he’s like the first kid there with the Jolly Ranchers out. Everybody gets one, and it’s just it’s candy, everybody loves candy,” Jordan Durborough-Ortiz said.
Ahwal believes that sharing Jolly Ranchers with the school is a kind gesture and can make someone’s day.
“I just think it’s like a nice thing to do because to a lot of people, just like a small thing can just put them in a good mood. It’s just nice to share with people,” Ahwal said.
