Senior Aly MacFarlane has been working to launch an all new Law and Justice club, hoping to bring new interest to those intrigued within different fields of law here at RHS.
“I started this club because it’s a really good opportunity to have on campus. It’s something we don’t really have a lot of here at Roseville High School. We have a lot of other clubs like Medical Club and Engineering Club, but we don’t really have opportunities or clubs for people who want to go into the legal field,” MacFarlane said.
Over summer, Aly reached out to Law and Justice teacher Gregory Burt in order to jumpstart this new club.
“Currently we’re in the process of getting it all approved by Brent Mattix, so we are in the process of right now putting everything together. We hope to get everything ready for Club Rush and everything else pushing forward so that we can get this club moving and get the word out about this club,” Burt said.
So far, MacFarlane is planning to aim for enough members in the club to recreate a mock trial jury.
“We’re trying to aim for at least 15 people because we want to do a mock trial, which is basically a jury, a defendant, a prosecutor, and then a couple witnesses,” MacFarlane said.
In order to hold this new club, MacFarlane intends to use Burt’s room in 501 to both organize and hold club meetings throughout the year.
“Yes, the club would be year long. The students would come and meet in here and we would talk about certain situations. We could even do after school stuff that prepares them for any kind of mock trial situation, and then in my Law and Justice class they’ll be kind of going through that process too,” Burt said.
With Burt already having experience within both the Law and Justice class and field, he was enthusiastic to become a part of the upcoming club.
“I’m excited for it and kind of just going through the process and even me learning with the students and going through the process of what it takes to be part of a mock trial. We have the field trip set up to the jail and the courthouse, so I think the students are pretty stoked about it,” Burt said.
