Junior Alex Romero, a newly transferred student, recently started fighting in boxing matches after several years of training. In order to stay in shape and compete in these matches, Romero engages in long and strenuous workouts, and trains hard.
“It took a while, probably just months of running consistently,” Romero said. “And as of right now, I’m cutting weight, so I’m looking to lose these extra 5-8 pounds. It’s a long process but if you’re focused on the goal, you can do it.”
Romero’s dad was the person who inspired him to become a boxer, and he has stayed with and supported him throughout his boxing journey. His dad being a boxer in the past helps his son work to what he wants to achieve in the future.
“He has been there through everything,” Romero said. “[He] drives me to all my fights, [and] he’s one of my coaches in my corner.”
Although Romero has been training for a few years, he has only just recently started competing in a number of professional matches. Despite this, he has shown some great skill and strength in the small amount of matches he’s fought in, being currently undefeated.
“I’ve fought in 3 [fights] and I’m currently 3-0.” Romero said. “I’m fighting in San Francisco this weekend for the diamond belt, so hopefully 4-0.”
Although his professional journey has technically just begun, Romero has plans to continue refining his skills and working hard to build up his rank and eventually fight in the big leagues, having some big goals for his future.
“Once I start competing in more tournaments then I’ll be nationally ranked,” Romero said. “Hopefully I’m going to one in November, and by then I’ll be Nationally ranked, and then [the] 2028 Olympics is the goal. And the track that I’m on now, I’m 100% sure I can do that.”
