RHS principal Ashley Serin has found a new interest in training with the FBI. As she learns more about behind the scenes of the FBI, she also gets to learn how to help out and support them throughout the process.
“So the FBI Citizens Academy is designed for community leaders to learn about the FBI’s role and support in the community. So there’s an application and background process and everything to get in, to get accepted.” Serin said.
Every Thursday night, Serin hears presentations from various FBI personnel held at the Sacramento field office, and she’s learned about different divisions and types of investigations.
“So what we do is we go to the Sacramento field office and we have presentations by special agents or victim specialists. We have heard from computer scientists, data operations specialists, & public relations at the last one. There are so many different jobs you can have within the FBI, not just a secret agent. But we’ll hear from different divisions on what they do, what they cover. For example, I’ve heard from violence crimes against children, cyber crime, espionage, white collar crime, we’ve talked about domestic terrorism, all of that. The whole purpose of it is for us, community leaders, to learn what the FBI does in our community, and also ways we can help support them as well in things they might be working on in investigations.” Serin said.
This program doesn’t just give presentations on what they do, but they also have to go to the FBI range and check out all the equipment they get to use, as well as demonstrations.
“It’s so cool, and we had an FBI range day, so we were actually able to go out to the FBI range, and we got to see a SWAT demonstration, and check out their armored vehicles. We got one-on-one instructions from an FBI firearms instructor; it was really interesting. I absolutely love that part, but really the whole purpose of it is just for us to learn what the FBI does to support the community.” Serin said.
Serin is also trying to get the FBI into the law and justice class to potentially be guest speakers for the students.
