Senior Russell Cobb has found a love for scuba diving. He’s been doing it for four years, starting with his uncle.
“So my uncle was a teacher for Dive Pros Masters, and he wanted to teach me and my parents how to scuba dive, so that got me into it, and I’ve already had a love for the ocean, the sea, and just being in water, so I just thought it would be a fun experience”, Russell said.
Russell has experienced many cool things while scuba diving, including some rare sea creatures.
“The greatest thing I’ve seen while diving was a great pacific octopus, you don’t see them that often because they’re nocturnal, and even at night they’re hard to find, but we got to see it during the day, which was a great sight to see”, Russell said.
“I’m probably going to be diving within the next month or 2 back at Monterey because I need to dial all my skills,” Russell said.
Russell has dived at many spots, but he has some favorites.
“Monterey off of Canary Road, there’s a couple spots I like to dive, then there’s a spot up in Taho on the Nevada side that’s a pretty cool spot that I often go to. My dream dive spot is probably on the coast of Mexico, Ecuador. I’ve heard a lot of good things about it, and it’s a really pretty place,” Russell said.
The deepest Russell had ever dived was ninety meters. He said he was being careless and forgot to check his instruments.
“I might take it professionally since I’m getting to the point where I can lead tours and dives on my own. I’m an intermediate diver at the moment, but yeah, I plan on continuing it after high school,” Russell said.
Diving is fun, but it could be expensive with Russell’s equipment costing $1200-1400; however, he still encourages people to try it out.
“It’s a fun experience to do, I’ve done it just because I’ve had a love for the ocean, I’ve found it fascinating to be underwater and see everything and their ecosystems and how they live in cohesiveness”, Russell said.
