The RHS Mural Club has started a new mural project in the West 900s building. The back wall and the stairs are both getting painted over with what the mural club believes to be visually appealing designs that should bring more colors to Roseville High School and brighten up the campus. Mural club advisor Patricia Leong wants this mural to help the students be more respectful and responsible of the building space.
“By caring enough about the space to put art in there, sometimes the kids will follow suit and start to take care of the space a little bit better,” Leong said “…it just needed something in there that made it feel a little bit more cozy and celebrate the spirit of Roseville High School with art”.
According to the club members, the new mural is meant to represent the pride and spirit that the students at RHS have inside themselves. Leong saw that there were some students who would hang out in the area during lunch and not be respectful of the space they were in.
“…we wanted to remind them of the tiger pride that we have at Roseville,” Leong said.
The area was also too bland and dull to look at because of the fact that it lacked design on the stairs and walls, so the mural club decided to add color to the walls to help brighten up the space and show off the spirit and school pride to the students.
“The back of the buildings don’t get much love and so we’re adding more school spirit and stuff,” Lela Vonbuelow, the president of the mural club said.
The students believe that the project has been an overall positive experience to work on despite some challenges that they have been facing. One of the obstacles that the mural club has encountered was how painting each individual stair can be tedious and or difficult to do as each step has to be given the same care as the rest.
“It’s hard to paint each individual stair,” Vonbuelow said “but it’s been fun, it’s been a good process, and it’s good skills.”
The vice president of the mural club, Katherine Black also recognized that there have been some other problems leading to a delay in completing the mural. The process is taking longer to get done due to a shortage of members in the mural club which could lead to issues.
“We are a little bit low on members so it’s been going kinda slow but it’s been really fun,” Black said “I love to paint and it’s been a fun experience.”
“We’re just trying to beautify the campus with the art program and show them what skills and talents the classmates have,” Leong said.
