On Wednesday, Mac DeMarco, (out of the blue as usual,) dropped another album called “Some Other Ones.” That morning I had opened Spotify and was absolutely hyped to see it since he had no prior announcements, (as he typically does with other albums or singles,) and he is definitely one of my favorite artists.
The album is relatively short, being 22 minutes, 12 seconds, and holding 9 tracks. But, we should be grateful because earlier this year he released “One Wayne G,” which had 199 songs, and was almost 9 hours long.
For the songs on the album, sadly Mac does not have a single lyric on any songs in the album, (much like One Wayne G and 5 Easy Hot Dogs,) so the album is basically just instrumentals. However, despite this, I genuinely enjoyed the album and it’s really just great background music for like a walk or a nice drive. But, I really hope he would put more time into his songs, like in “This Old Dog” his 2017 album, in which he had actual lyrics.
The song names on the album are pretty random, some examples being “Onion Man,” “Fish Terry,” and “Special K.” But, that’s just Mac for you. He’s definitely an interesting individual. Especially seeing the album cover, it has me wondering if Mac is off his meds.
If I had to rate this album, I would give it a 7.5/10 (don’t attack me yet let me explain,) because although I absolutely love Mac DeMarco, I just wish he would spend more time on his songs. His older albums had him singing much much more, and he hasn’t released an album where he sings in like years. But I 100% recommend to listen to this, because one thing I love about Mac DeMarco is that you don’t have to really pay attention to most of music, and it’s great just overall study music. For instance, I’m listening to the album while writing this.
Lately, Mac DeMarco has had some pretty great singles this year, such as ‘The Dark Prince,” and “My Simple Jeep” with Eyedress, and “Simply Paradise” with Ryan Paris. But those bangers compared to his albums in the past year has me a bit upset because we know what he can make, but he just releases instrumentals.
But again, I’m gonna be extremely grateful because of how frequently he drops, and his overall pretty good quality, since I’m still waiting for the next Kanye Album, and we all know how often that dude drops. (Sigh.)
But back to the album, it was just simple, but not in a bad way. I appreciate Mac for his constant releases, but I honestly just wish he would take his time and actually sing in some of his albums. He has such a nice voice and is so talented, and we all know that from albums like “Salad Days,” and “Here Comes the Cowboy,” etc. Yes, I know my Mac DeMarco.
If I had to say my favorite album, I would say either “This Old Dog” or “Salad Days,” but all of his albums are so fire. “Some Other Ones” may not be one of his best, but I had fun listening, and it’s overall just a great listen, that I definitely hope you check out.
