The beloved indie pop artist Mitski has recently dropped a new album,” The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We” which has been long awaited by fans since her last album, “Laurel Hell”, which was lowkey a huge flop. “The Land is Inhospitable and so are we”, is definitely something unique.
This album drop was introduced with, “Bug Like an Angel”. This song describes how she feels towards another person through the personification of a bug. The chorus is what makes the song a great listen, as it’s short but her vocals alongside the instrumentals are just, wow. Although this song was a banger, her older music will always be above her newer music. It is quite strange to say that some of her new music is the beginning of a newer era.
In this new album, the talented Mitski created a masterpiece in terms of her newer music. She is normally portrayed as the melancholic type of artist as her beats and lyrics are more on the slower and sadder side. “My Love Mine All Mine” is definitely the best song on the album, and there is no arguing for that. This song is just different from the rest. It’s as if Mitski actually “retired from a sad new career in business”, as one of her older albums is named, into a new era of music, where she creates happy and feel-good music. This great tune is a good song that portrays the art of romance and loving someone, and it brings tears to the eyes.
Honestly, her old music will always hold priority in my playlists, her other newer songs from the album aren’t all that bad. “I don’t mind” was also a good listen, despite the random lyrics, but hey, would it be a Mitski banger without the incoherent lyrics?
After “Laurel Hell” flopped, “The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We” was her great comeback. Again, her newer music doesn’t quite hit like her older tunes that she produced towards the beginning of her career, but it’s just natural that an artist changes their style.
The album’s other masterpiece, “Heaven” also portrays the sweet feeling of a loving relationship with a person you love. Honestly, these pieces were much needed by her audience, despite her chill sorrowful bangers she has produced in the past.
Although this album wasn’t a favorite of mine during the first listen, it somehow grew on me. Maybe it’s because her older music is simply better since the low mood always makes listening worthwhile, but honestly, this new music style choice of hers was very much needed. This whole album was amazing, especially since it brought out another side of Mitski that we had yet to see, and it’s definitely making it to a few of my playlists.
