Recently there were new tennis courts built in the upper fields. According to Brent Mattix, this has caused for a Roseville traditional event, the bonfire, to no longer happen.
“Roseville High School’s been doing an annual bonfire since 1995, was the first year that we lit up the school bonfire. After covid we actually were the only school in Northern California that was allowed to have a bonfire. Really proud of that because we worked with the community to make that happen during covid. We actually migrated to having two bonfires after covid. Unfortunately with the construction we lost our area where we were burning the bonfire.” Brent Mattix said.
Some students give their opinions on the cancellation of the bonfire.
“I’m kind of bummed out because you know, it was a good time for me to socialize with my friends and hangout. We always had Kiki’s Chicken up there so you know I’m going to miss that. I went the past two years but this year it’s not happening, so it kind of sucks.” Senior Harold Neufville said.
“I’m kind of sad because it was a lot of fun last year, I had a lot of fun with my friends and you know, it’s something that I look forward to and I’m kind of sad there’s not going to be one this year.” Sophomore Tristen Chapin said.
“I’m just sad they cancelled it you know, because like usually the bonfire is something fun and it’s something for the students to socialize and I’m not going to have that this year and now I’m sad.” Senior Leonardo Huerta said.
According to Mattix they couldn’t find a solution for the fall bonfire to continue this year.
“So unfortunately with just working with the fire department and walking the grounds with our fire marshal we won’t be able to come up with a solution this year. It takes time for us to get proper permits and stuff of that nature. So for sure in the fall right now it’s been a tradition that we’ve had a bonfire in the fall. We won’t be able to have anything go on, so there may be a possibility in the spring we can come up with an alternative activity and see what we can do” Mattix said.
