Umai Savory Hot Dogs, which began in San Jose, now has two locations in the Sacramento area. One in Roseville and a new one in Natomas. Umai Dog is an Asian fusion hot dog restaurant that serves over 25 unique flavors, and customers can even build their own.
Once I heard the second restaurant opened in Natomas, I knew I had to go there. Unfortunately, I had too high of expectations, which left me disappointed. At the Umai restaurant in Natomas, I had to wait 45 minutes for a hot dog that barely had any toppings on it and to top it all off, it didn’t even taste that good.
There, I ordered the Banger + Mash ($7.00) which had mashed potatoes and caramelized onions, and the Tokyo inu rangoons.
Customers can choose from 5 different flavors of $3.00 inu rangoons: Yokohama, Tokyo, Sapporo, Tijuana or Berlin. I’ve only tried the Tokyo flavor but, I was very satisfied with the inu rangoons. The hot dog, on the other hand, had an odd flavor and all the toppings were really bland, plus the serving itself was fairly small. The inu rangoons were really good. The inu rangoons are wonton wrapped cream cheese with hot dogs and cheese .
On the other hand, I had a slightly better experience at the restaurant in Roseville. The wait time was shorter and the food was better. Overall, there’s nothing too special about Umai to go back for.
