J $tash’s “Relax With Me” is an underappreciated mixtape

CLAIRE OERTLY

Just over a year since his last drop, J $tash has returned with an eight track mixtape “Relax With Me”. Released on the first of December, the mix is filled with lots of features, making for the perfect tape to listen to all winter break.

Each track has a similar head bumping beat but his variations of flow and artist collabs make each song unique. The songs aren’t annoying when played in a row. You could easily play the entire tape in the car with your friends and nobody would complain.

One of my favorite tracks is “$AUCE”, partially because of the addition of Lil Tracy and Johnny Drama. The song is also a favorite because the piano style beat provides a catchy and complexly layered sound. One that often is lost in more simple piano style beats. Lil Tracy and J $tash truly compliment each other very well and should definitely collab more often.

“Transformer” goes pretty hard as well, J $stash literally just goes in on the beat and destroys it. He references Shia LaBeouf in his lyrics, who starred in the series. This reference is not only iconic but it allowed for him to tie in a cool title with his lyrics. One thing I hate is artists whose song titles have nothing to do with the song itself, so I appreciate his effort at connecting the two.

What anyone can appreciate about J $tash’s music is that he has a distinct sound and theme. He often has girls speaking in the intros and outros of his songs which adds to the personality of his music. It makes everything that much more unique to him and his style, something that not a lot of artists possess.

For all the Relax Rekords fans out there, this tape is a reminder of the amazing music of 2014 culture. The iconic “Relax Gang Vol. 1.” J $stash brings back memories of this by dropping the culture song “Guerillas 2” with Kenny Turnup x Teddy Blow.

The sequel uses a speeded up version of  the original “Guerillas” track to break between verses and contrast between the artists they were three years ago versus now. This making it a truly incredible listening experience for long time fans.

Although J $tash released “Guerillas 2” before the full tape and almost always drops music in the Winter months, the tape itself still dropped relatively unexpectedly. It definitely has not yet gotten the hype or recognition it deserves. I have no doubt that within a few months, almost everyone who enjoys rap music will be listening to it.

J $tash is one of those artists who is timeless and always make music anyone can slap to. While his effort and quality content may be a bit under appreciated by some, real ones can’t wait to get new speakers for Christmas to slap this tape on with their friends, having a good ol’ time.
