Sia’s “Everyday is Christmas” is too sappy, not enough Christmas

Sia recently released a new album but not just any old album… a Christmas album titled “Everyday is Christmas” but while listening to it it felt more reminiscent to Valentine’s Day. The album included 10 songs, only two of which actually sounded like Christmas songs (“Ho Ho Ho” & “Santa is Coming for us”). The rest seemed more focused on love and relationships which was disappointing as I was expecting an album full of holiday bops, not another ode to the broken hearted.

Going in, I had high expectations. All of the songs were Sia originals and I was prepared to be lifted by Sia’s unique voice and indie sound into the holiday spirit. I could not even listen to a single song in its entirety without feeling like I was just listening to some lame pop song about a cheesy relationship gone bad.

The vocals were unique as always but that’s just Sia. All the songs have a good beat, they just failed lyrically. Adding the word Christmas in a song does not mean it is an actual Christmas song. What was missing for me was the classic Christmas sound of jingling bells and jazzy tunes to really captivate the holiday vibe.

The one exception to this sad excuse for a Christmas album is “Ho Ho Ho”. It completely and utterly delivered from the beat to the lyrics, they were perfectly fitting for this jolly time of year. “Santa is Coming for us” gives off somewhat of a Christmas feel but “Ho Ho Ho” still takes the (fruit) cake for the best off “Everyday is Christmas”. I wish Sia would have just gone the predictable route. She should’ve done some covers of classic Christmas songs because this does neither Sia nor Christmas justice.

I honestly feel like Sia just capitalized on the Christmas theme to get more exposure for her album, considering the release date, rather than actually making a festive album for people to enjoy around Christmas time. Even the song titled lead song was not giving me the festive feels. Overall the music was not bad but disappointing. I was banking on some indie holiday anthems but I just received a sappy pop album. It was definitely not what I would consider Christmas themed.
