MOVIE OF THE WEEK: ‘Hitman’s Bodyguard’ meets expectations with Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson
August 29, 2017
The Hitman’s Bodyguard is an action packed thrill ride directed by Patrick Hughes that will leave you on the edge of your seat. The story follows a body guard that is out of his prime (Ryan Reynolds) and a trained assassin (Samuel L. Jackson) who have to make it to a trial without getting killed to put an evil dictator behind bars.
Going in, I had no idea what to expect as far as the plot went. Literally the only information I had on the movie was the fact that it starred Samuel L. Jackson, which I was excited about.
Having seen Jackson’s previous movies, you could say I had high expectations for this one. Not only did Jackson deliver, but the whole cast made the movie what it is. Ryan Reynolds played his character of an elite bodyguard to a T and Jackson embodied a carefree, convict hitman as best as I could imagine it.
Samuel L Jackson is one of my favorite actors, especially in action movies. He’s bad and his role in this movie definitely showcased that. His humor and just him as a whole made me so happy.
My favorite part of the movie was the relationship between Jackson and his onscreen wife Salma Hayek. It was hilarious as well as heartwarming in a kind of twisted way. They never actually see each other face to face but the flashbacks and phone call are enough to get the dynamic of their marriage.
The entire movie was action packed and incorporated the humor perfectly. The story line was super interesting and had a few plot twists.
Reynolds and Jackson have many run-ins with their enemies including car chases and hand to hand combat scenes throughout the film and that’s what kept it interesting. However, there was no lack of darkly humorous punchlines that added the needed and enjoyable snippet of fun.
In addition to the action and humor the characters’ development is surprisingly touching for an action movie that’s pace is carried through gunfights. The bodyguard and the assassin learning from each others weaknesses as they go on. Overall this movie is fun and light but delivers a solid plot and likable characters.
