Senior Shelbie McKay finalized her commitment to play basketball for the Westmont Warriors yesterday after signing her letter of intent to Westmont College in Moeller Gym.

McKay is excited about her decision and is relieved to have finally committed. In her eyes, the school is a perfect fit for her.

“When I went down and visited you could just tell that everyone cared and that was a huge thing for me,” McKay said. “They’re very family oriented and it’s just hard for me to turn that down. The opportunity down there with internships and how much the professors care about you and the class sizes and things like that are huge for my future.”

McKay had multiple options to choose from, including Division II schools like CSU Chico and CSU East Bay, but she ultimately decided on Westmont because of the school’s opportunities, supportiveness and athletic success.

“The coaches just really care,” McKay said. “They care how I perform on the basketball court but they also care just as much about how I perform off of it. They’re also national champions – no matter what level that is at, that’s a really hard thing to do and I think that’s amazing for them and hopefully I can contribute to that.”

Westmont’s womens basketball team won the NAIA national championship in 2013 and have also made it to the national championship 11 times in the last 16 years. McKay hopes to bring the program even more success with her talent in the future.
