MOVIE OF THE WEEK: A glance back at ‘The Prestige,’ a classic Jackman performance

PRESTON WALTER

In honor of the latest and final Wolverine outing in Logan, I decided this week to review a movie with one of my all time favorite actors, Hugh Jackman.

“Are you watching closely?” This is the opening line to the 2006 movie The Prestige. A movie about two stage magicians in the late 1890s who end up forming a rivalry and both try to out do the other. Hugh Jackman plays Robert Angier, a better showman than magician who tries to figure out one big trick that will make him famous. His rival Alfred Borden, played by Christian Bale, is a bad showman but has way better tricks up his sleeves like “The Teleported Man” that drive his rival insane.

Written and directed by the ever so popular Christopher Nolan, The Prestige provides to be a movie that is a never-ending carousel of confusing. Nolan so expertly uses all of the tools to keep this film captivating from start to finish. Without the spectacular editing and amazing production design Nolan had it would not have elevated the movie so much more for me. Of course Nolan also gets easily two of the best performances from his two lead actors Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman to help anchor the movie.

The thing I love so much about The Prestige is the fact that the entire movie Nolan asks you right from the beginning are you watching closely? Even if you are you will still miss the tiniest of details in The Prestige. This movie was made with such impeccable skill and crafted so beautifully that it leaves for endless amounts of rewatchability.

Nolan has both our characters in the story come full circle. At the beginning, Jackman’s character, Angier, is not willing to sacrifice anything in order to perform an amazing trick. But slowly you see his character realize that in order to achieve the perfect trick of “The Teleported Man,” he has to be willing to sacrifice and in the end his entire character changes because of that. Bale’s character Borden has to deal with always keeping secrets and in the end he comes full circle as in the end we see him giving up his secrets to become a better man.

Not only does Nolan get amazing performances out of his two main actors but he gets amazing performances from Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine and even David Bowie. Johansson is of course beautiful as always and gives a really great performance as a stage assistant and love interest to both of the main characters. Michael Caine is great in whatever role you put him in — but man does he kill it as the mentor to both Angier and Borden. Bowie is great as Nikola Tesla and even brings with him his realistic German accent that makes me realize how much I miss that awesome man.

In the end The Prestige is my favorite Christopher Nolan film (outside of The Dark Knight) as it has strong messages of sacrifice, struggle and success. And with two stellar performances from Jackman and Bale and a great supporting cast, The Prestige never fails to blow people’s minds, especially with the amazing ending. Very rarely do I watch a movie that kept my jaw dropping for the entire third act. Throughout the movie, Nolan teaches us how they set up a magic trick. But in the end, he is the one who has played the magic trick on us the audience.
