TRAILER WATCH: ‘Stranger Things,’ ‘Samurai Jack’ trailers drop Super Bowl weekend

The commercials are always the most hyped-up aspect of the Superbowl, but I didn’t expect to be as excited by a Superbowl commercial as I was by the Stranger Things season two teaser. It started out looking like a vintage Eggo commercial and then showed off several clips from the upcoming season. It promises a similar amount of mystery and suspense as the first season, while also raising the stakes with the scene of some sort of giant monster towering over the entire town. The trailer also shows off more of the ’80s aesthetic that resonated with so many fans, with the vintage eggo commercial that precedes the trailer, a scene of the main characters riding their bikes dressed as Ghostbusters and the banger of a theme song playing at the end. It is a little bit disappointing to see that season two isn’t coming until Halloween when most people assumed it was coming sometime this summer. But I, as well as most fans, have high expectations, and this trailer makes it look like fans aren’t going to be disappointed by Stranger Things 2.

The next day, Adult Swim premiered their trailer for season five of the animated show
Samurai Jack. It’s been almost 13 years since season four of the show, and the announcement that it was being continued this long since it ended was a shock to many fans. I’m wary of any kind of continuation at this point, considering all the horrible reboots and continuations of cartoons recently, but this trailer restored a little faith in Adult Swim’s ability to produce good cartoons. The trailer opens up with some context of what exactly has been happening in the Samurai Jack universe since season four, and then launches into several action sequences featuring an older looking Jack using several weapons including some kind of minigun and a giant trident. There wasn’t much in this trailer other than the action, but hopefully we will get to see more of the Samurai Jack universe and characters at some point in the future. The series is coming out relatively soon in March, so it will be exciting to see where it goes.
