MOVIE OF THE WEEK: Gyllenhaal displays depth of ability with ‘Enemy’
February 1, 2017
In this column, each Wednesday I will pick a movie – either a new film that caught my eye, or a film I believe was overlooked or underappreciated – and share my thoughts.
Enemy is one of my all time favorite movies, making it a perfect piece to kick of this movie-of-the-week column.
Enemy which is directed by one of the best directors working today in Denis Villeneuve, who has brought us such hits as Arrival, Sicario and Prisoners. But this was the movie, in my opinion, that got him on the map in America.Villeneuve had directed very popular french films such as Polytechnique and Incendies.
Enemy follows the story of a college history professor Adam Bell and actor Anthony Claire both played by Jake Gyllenhaal who one day mysteriously finds out he has a doppelganger and goes out to find him.
Enemy is a slow burning movie that relies on foreshadowing and heavy imagery throughout the film. Villeneuve has become a master of suspense in this movie as we slowly try to piece together how these two people could be related. As we are carried through the twist and turns, the movie culminates into one of the most mind bending and controversial movie endings I have ever seen. Everything about this movie – from the bleak setting, the vivid imagery involving spiders, the haunting score to the incredible cinematography – accumulates to a haunting thriller that feels like it takes place in a dream.
The performances in Enemy are all spectacular and all add something to the main plot of the story. Jake Gyllenhaal, of course, steals the movie with easily one of his best performances as he portrays each different person with a sense of uniqueness and ability that only Gyllenhaal could do. Sarah Gadon delivers a real and raw performance as Anthony’s pregnant wife and Melanie Laurent gives a great performance as Adam’s girlfriend who is often is sense of relief from the stress he has during his teaching job.
In the end, Enemy is a film that filmmakers don’t make anymore. This film is definitely out there with its premise but it delivers on every front. I feel like this is a movie they should show to people who want to be directors or filmmakers because Enemy is made to perfection. This is the movie that I watched that really started to get me to appreciate the little things in the movies and it’s what makes me love movies today. I cannot recommend Enemy enough to people especially if they want to watch a weird movie that will start a long discussion to as to what you think happens in the end.
