‘Overwatch’ warrants 2016 hardware

GABE TOWNSEND

Blizzard Entertainment’s first person shooter, team-based, multiplayer video game Overwatch won “best game direction,” “best multiplayer game,” “ESports game of the year” and the most prestigious award, “game of the year,” at the 2016 Game Awards. Overwatch comes with amazing graphics, fast paced action and a vast array of experiences. I really, really enjoy this game. It feels like a mixture of  League of Legends and Call of Duty.

Overwatch takes place sixty years into the future, when thirty years prior man-made robots called “Omnics” turned against mankind. The lore of this game is deep and leaves you wondering what is going to happen next. It’s incredibly interesting and I think Blizzard will take full advantage of how intriguing the lore is.

Overwatch consists of 23 playable “heroes” each having their own unique movement,  abilities and weapons. All heroes are divided into four different roles: offense, defense, tank and support. This variety allows players to play this game in 23 different unique ways. Each game is usually played by defending/attacking a control point and/or escorting a payload across the map. Along with the base gamemode there is an arcade mode where different game modes are introduced with each update. The game also has a competitive mode where you can play with people in your skill rank and move up skill ranks for different prizes after a certain amount of time passes.

I am  highly addicted and I never get bored. Blizzard is constantly updating, adding new game modes, player skins, maps and heroes so the game is constantly becoming something new and fresh. The gameplay is quick and I like that. I like getting right into the action. Even though the game is fast paced there is still an immense amount of strategy. This game is incredible but nothing is perfect. A lot of this game is relying on teammates and that can cause problems. If your team isn’t supporting you and working together then you are most likely going to lose the match. Blizzard is also constantly making heroes stronger and weaker making this game feel incomplete. This can cause heroes to be overpowered and almost feel necessary on a team or a hero is too weak and no one ever uses them. Hopefully after a certain amount of updates, every hero can be balanced perfectly with each other and then this game will be fully complete.
