TOWNSEND: ‘Infinite Warfare’ maintains franchise’s recent record of mediocrity
November 14, 2016
Game developer Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, released on Nov. 4, seemed to be nothing more than just a 13th instalment in the series of the first person shooter video games. This game has some positives but overall it just feels like the exact same thing as last year’s Call of Duty – and the Call of Duty from the year before. It seems like every year another Call of Duty is released that is even more similar to the year before’s Call of Duty. Infinite Warfare is unoriginal and features many of the same features as Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.
The single player campaign has you take control of Captain Nick Reyes, a Tier 1 Special Operations pilot. This game introduces a new setting for gameplay, outer space. Another innovation is aerial combat with enemies in space. Other than being in space not much else is different about the campaign in this Call of Duty.
Infinite Warfare’s Multiplayer gamemode feels like a copy paste of Black Ops 3. Infinite Warfare introduced “combat rigs” which allow the player to use a certain weapon and ability which is the same exact thing as Black Ops 3’s “specialists.” Infinite Warfare uses boost jumping and has literally the exact same movement system as well. It seems like the only thing that Infinity Ward actually did different was the actual weapons you use, which is different in every single Call of Duty.
Infinity Ward also gave their take on the zombies gamemode. Treyarch’s introduced zombies in Call of Duty: World at War which were well recieved. Other Call of Duty game developers such as Sledgehammer Games have taken a stab at a zombies gamemode. While Sledgehammer Games’ “Exo-Zombies” was not very popular among the fans of zombies, Infinite Warfare’s “Zombies in Spaceland” gives something that is special and polished. While a lot of the features are reused, that’s somewhat of a given with the zombies gamemode. New gameplay mechanics are implemented while prior mechanics are recycled. They manage to flow well in the gamemode.
Infinite Warfare serves as a lackluster Call of Duty and a pretty mediocre game. I would not recommend spending $60 on this game when you could just wait a couple months and buy it on discount.
