Soula Boy, Bow Wow justify low expectations with ‘Ignorant Sh*t’
October 28, 2016
Well, it appears as if the hip-hop Gods have blessed us with yet another gospel mixtape, from not only the iconic Soulja Boy, but the ever so prominent Bow Wow. Ignorant Sh*t does what most think it would do: disappoint.
The production on this mixtape does not show whatsoever. Every single beat on this mixtape is overshadowed by Soulja Boy and Bow Wow’s voices. “Lean” has the best beat on the mixtape, but this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone as producer London on da Track had a vital part in its creation.
Though the beats aren’t as prominent in the song, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Soulja Boy and Bow Wow actually have impressive flow and lyrics, when they’re not talking about selling cocaine and getting money, that actually made me laugh. Their flow sounds so superb because of how quickly they’re able to deliver their lines, not to mention how skilled the laying of their voices on each beat is.
Soulja Boy and Bow Wow, though I don’t know why I expected more, mainly focus their lyrics on drugs, women and money. I don’t mind when rappers do this, except I think it’s so overdone now that it becomes redundant, especially in this mixtape, after one repeats the same line over and over again. “Ignorant Sh*t” doesn’t actually start for an entire 40 seconds and just contains dead space.
“Ignorant Sh*t,” “That Way Remix,” “Rick Flair,” and “My House” all sound similar due to their quiet, simple beats, repetition of certain lines and praise of selling coke while simultaneously becoming rich. The album fails to captivate listeners and actually made me not want to stop listening multiple times.
After listening to the mixtape, it’s clear that Bow Wow and Soulja Boy are about equal in terms of rapping on this production. However, if I had to choose one, I’d choose Soulja Boy just because his verses were better layered upon the beats and had more clever lines.
Though both tried strenuously, neither rapper had good ad-libs unfortunately. None of them were cleverly timed, supported the rapper nor added any hype to the track.
If you are a fan of either Soulja Boy or Bow Wow, don’t worry abou this album. They both release new music so frequently that this album will soon not be talked about. Sooner or later one of them will release a new album similar to this one, and they will both continue to disappoint listeners.
