Scream 6 slashes its way into New York

JACE HENDRICKS, FEATURES REPORTER

Scream 6 is the most recent entry in the Scream franchise that follows the surviving cast of scream 5 in a new setting, rather than Woodsboro the setting for Scream 6 is changed to New York to follow the cast as they move to college. Scream 6’s newest setting breathes a lot of new life into the series allowing for more interesting kills and new possibilities for what the movie can do.

Scream 6’s story follows Sam, played by Melissa Barrera, and Tara, played by Jenna Ortega as they try to survive a new and much more brutal GhostFace killer while trying to find and kill GhostFace to end his rampage themselves with the returning help of Kirby, played by Hayden Panettiere.

The acting in this movie was really good and left even the minor characters feeling fleshed out and likable, so it really made you feel bad when they get horribly murdered. Speaking of the kills, this movie is especially brutal compared to other movies, with one kill near the end having my entire theater gasping.

The Scream franchise is known for having a lot of meta humor about horror movies and their tropes and this movie is no different, although it can get a bit annoying at times. Most of the jokes in the movie just go along the lines of calling someone the killer or making specific horror movie references. If you do like the dialogue of Scream 5 you most likely won’t have any issues with the dialogue of this movie.

Scream 6 features some really intense and atmospheric scenes, with some scenes feeling genuinely claustrophobic and horrifying for example, the scene set on a subway train filled with people dressed as GhostFace had me transfixed on the screen.

Scream 6 also covered some interesting topics like idolization of serial killers and the way people will interfere in victims’ lives leaving you to second guess who the killers were.

Scream 6 was a bit predictable but not enough to not have the killer reveal un-surprising or

Boring. The opening scene still followed the other movies of killing off a popular celebrity as the first kill, but the opening of this movie was particularly intense.

This movie is really good even if some of the dialogue can get a bit annoying at times. It’s not groundbreaking, but if you want to watch a good scary movie, this is definitely for you.
