Gamescom makes more games come

BRADY HENDRICKS, A&E REPORTER

Since 2009, Gamescom has been one of the biggest gaming events, giving gamers tons of announcements to get excited about every year. This was the first year they have been back in person since the pandemic, so they had to bring to their A-game with tons of great announcements.

Easily one of the most anticipated games for Gamescom was Dead Island 2, which was announced almost 8 years ago and finally got a new trailer and release date for February 3, 2023, almost 12 years after the original came out. It’s shown off some gameplay that looks awfully familiar to another zombie game Dying Light. But other than gameplay we still don’t know much about the game. If it can avoid the many pitfalls of the first game it could be a lot of fun.

Another fan favorite to get a new trailer was Sonic Frontiers, a new open zone-style game that got a brand new trailer and a new release date. The game looks like a new spin on the classic formula and could be a great step in the right direction for the franchise. It comes out on November 8th, 2022.

Announced back in September 2020, but delayed due to Covid, was Hogwarts Legacy.

A new game set in the Harry Potter universe featuring a brand new story set in the 1800s. The game will be an open-world adventure, promising to allow the player to explore an open-world set of Hogwarts and its surrounding areas. You will also decide how you want to play with many different things to do with the game, saying you can “be the witch or wizard you want to be” by brewing potions, making friends, and making “difficult choices”. Although the game doesn’t have a lot to show for itself so it could be too good to be true.

One of the most unexpected announcements was Dune: Awakening. Based on the book series and the 2021 film, it is a survival MMO set in the dune universe. We don’t know much about the game, but the concept seems like lots of fun to tackle with friends. It’s expected to release on Ps5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Another highly anticipated game shown this year was Gotham Knights. Giving us a new trailer showing off some of the villains that characters like robin and Nightwing will take on. In the trailer, we saw villains such as Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and Harley Quinn. The game looks interesting and has the potential to live up to the previous Batman games and maybe even be better.

And the best announcement for Gamescom was a new 3v7 multiplayer horror game with a beloved 80’s horror IP. Killer Klowns From Outer Space The Game was one of the most intriguing announcements. Created by the director of the Friday the 13th game, it’s sure to be a hit. It’s expected to come out in early 2023 for PC, Ps4, Ps5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox 1

and I can’t wait to hear more about the game in the coming months.

The event also had awards show that gave awards to new upcoming titles revealed at the show. The most wanted game awards went to Lies of P for Playstation, Tin Hearts for Nintendo Switch, The Last Case of Benedict Fox for Xbox, and Metal: Hellsinger for PC. The best ongoing game award went to the sea of thieves.

Gamescom also featured a new Nintendo Treehouse event which showed off 2 new games. One of which is the much-anticipated Splatoon 3 which received new gameplay for its single-player story mode. Although It doesn’t look much different from Splatoon 2 and for me will act as something to practice with while taking a break from multiplayer. The other game shown at Treehouse was Harvestella, which is a farming simulation RPG that looks painfully bland and uninteresting. It looks like a side activity in a Final Fantasy game.

Overall Gamescom just proves what I’ve been thinking that 2022 and 2023 are gonna be great years for games and I can’t wait for all these great-looking games to come out.
