What if…?: Another Marvel success
October 26, 2021
After a rough year of dealing with the coronavirus, Marvel Studios has killed it with every project they’ve released in 2021. Their first animated show, What-If, continued Marvel’s dominance of 2021.
What-If’s premise is unique from any of the other Marvel Projects ever released. The Watcher, voiced by Jeffrey Wright, narrates how other universes play out when one event in the MCU timeline we all know and love is changed. These lead to different variations of the characters we’ve seen in the movies.
There are a lot of characters introduced, but my personal favorites are Captain Carter and Star-Lord T’Challa. We also see variations of Erik Killmonger, Thor and Doctor Strange. At the end of the show, the Watcher, who narrates the show from beginning to end, finally breaks his oath of “not interfering” and assembles a team known as the “Guardians of the Multiverse”.
The show is straight out incredible. The animation is top-tier. The voice acting is incredible. Marvel got the majority of its previous actors to come back and voice their characters. The actors who did not come back to voice their infamous characters, such as Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. were replaced perfectly.
The one issue with the show was due to COVID-19 production. The 9th episode was supposed to be “What If Gamora defeated Thanos”, but the episode had to be pushed to season 2. So in the finale, when all of the heroes team up to defeat Infinity Ultron, we see Gamora as a vital part of the Guardians of the Multiverse. Yet, she was the only character to not have an episode describing their journey leading up to the finale.
Other than that little plot hole, What If was yet another home run from Marvel Studios. The comedy landed with the Marvel community, really every character who wasn’t featured in any of the previous Marvel Disney+ shows got at least one shining moment in the show and the finale exceeded many expectations and capped off a perfect season.
What If was a new concept of show for Marvel, and their success just makes me even more excited for the future of the MCU on Disney+. With shows like Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel right on the horizon, paired with blockbuster movies such as Eternals, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness to release within the next 6 months, the future of the MCU has Marvel geeks across the world excited.
