Are Esports sports? The heated 1v1

Esports are a rapidly growing event in the gaming community. Esports is a competitive gaming scene where pro players compete against each other for money, trophies, etc. There has been a lot of controversy around the fact of it being a sport.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, “A Sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.”

Now while Esports don’t have much “physical exertion,” they do have some key factors that other sports do. Reaction time is a huge key in most sports including Esports. Pro players have to have a quick reaction to compete well. A big chunk of the Esport franchise is based around shooters, and to play well in shooters you need to be able to aim at your opponent quickly.

When you think of professional gamers you think of someone who spends all their time on the couch. But in reality professionals are normally part of an organization/team, where there are training facilities and organization houses. Pro gamers have to spend almost all of their time improving their performance, strategies and team communication.

Esports athletes achieve up to 400 movements on the keyboard and the mouse per minute, four times as much as the average gamer. The whole thing is asymmetrical, because both hands are being moved at the same time and various parts of the brain are also being used at the same time.

When it comes down to it, gaming involves sitting down and using your hands to play. But there are many other activities that are close to the same thing, that are considered sports. Racing, rowing, kayaking and even chess are sports. Now just because you’re not up and moving doesn’t mean it can’t be a sport.

The 2021 Nba Finals had 4.6 million viewers, While the 2021 Free Fire Esport world series had over 5 million viewers. This is proof of Esports being up there with one of the biggest sports in terms of popularity.

Just because Esports don’t have as much movement as traditional sports, they are still considered sports.
