Last weekend, Roseville High School’s Tiger band and colorguard made a dynamic showing at the Grape Bowl Classic and walked away with an ensemble of awards. The band earned first place overall in their division but also took first in all subcategories, including percussion, colorguard, music, visual analysis and field conductor.

Section Leader Nicole Lopes said she believes this success will inspire band as they tackle future competitions.

“I think what we got out of this competition was a drive to do better,” Lopes said. “This was not our strongest rep, but it’s exciting to know that we can get a better score from actually doing our best.”

Drum Major Serafina Kirk won first place in her own category: field conductor.

“I’ve definitely stepped up as a leader these past few years,” Kirk said. “I get my own judge, it’s very scary, but I got first place too.”

For first year band teacher Michael Austin, this initial success seems a good indicator of what’s to come in the future.

“It’s my first year. I didn’t really know what I was getting into, but I’m definitely pleased with where the band is going so far,” Austin said. “[As a band] you have to move together, you have to do every single thing together. You move as one unit.”
