Young Thug honors idols with release of No, My Name is JEFFERY

Young Thug’s back with a new mixtape that features creative, well-mixed beats; hilarious wordplay; and smooth transitions throughout.

The Atlanta-born rapper’s  latest album, No, My Name Is JEFFERY, has 10 tracks and features artists like Travis Scott, Gucci Mane, Quavo, Offset, Young Scooter and Wyclef Jean.

In the past, Young Thug commented on not believing in gender and admitted that he occasionally wears women’s clothes – evident in his new album cover.  Rocking a flowing blue dress, Thug definitely uses the cover to try and push some boundaries. For long-time fans, this photo really didn’t come as much of a shock. .

The production value on this project is high, and many of the beats are nicely produced and unique. They carry on his signature over-the-top bass and work well with his lyrics. When I listen to him rap, I couldn’t imagine him rapping to any other beat. They fit perfectly with each track. This album reminds me of some of Thug’s past works, due to his flow and humorous wordplay. In ‘Floyd Mayweather’ he describes beating someone up “like Ron Artest,” the basketball player who infamously elbowed James Harden in the head.

This time around, Thugger named some tracks after his idols: Gucci Mane, Rihanna, Floyd Mayweather and, of course, Harambe.

Other tracks like “Future Swag,” my favorite track off of the album, showcase Young Thug’s rapping prowess. It has a well produced beat that sounds like it came from Future himself.

Really, every track except for “Floyd Mayweather” is enjoyable. It came off unorganized and a bit all over the place – not to mention, Gucci Mane only had one verse.

But other than that, the tape is solid, beats are hard and Thug’s lyrics flow nicely.

This isn’t Thug’s best work, but it gets the job done. With great beats, steady flow and clever ad-libs, JEFFERY is the classic Young Thug mixtape that all of his fans expected.
