Winter sports finish league on top

As of last week, both boys varsity basketball and girls varsity soccer took home their CVC league titles. Girls basketball, boys soccer, and wrestling all continued onto playoffs, making all 5 winter sports continuing onto playoffs.

Prior to this week, both the soccer and basketball programs dominated the CVC. Girls varsity soccer finished their league season undefeated, with an 9-0-3 record and earned a 5th place seed in the Division 2 playoffs. Boys varsity basketball finished in similar fashion, with a 10-2 league record and a 8th place seed. Girls varsity basketball finished league tied for 2nd and continued onto playoffs in the 10th seed, then fell to the Laguna Creek Cardinals last night. The boys varsity soccer team defeated the Lincoln Zebras 2-1 in their first playoff game from their 5th seed position, and now will play in the second round playoff game against Laguna Creek.

After clinching the league title, girls soccer looks to find success in playoffs this week against Lincoln tonight, then return to the section finals next week for the third year in a row. After playing varsity all four years yet each season falling short of a league title, senior Ashlynn Hernandez is proud of her team for accomplishing their goal of winning the CVC.

“We’ve been trying to win league all four years and I just can’t believe we finally did it,” Hernandez said.

Now looking into tonight’s game against Lincoln, Hernandez is excited to see her team continue on and hopes they can return to finals.

“I really hope we can return to section finals again this year because it’d be great to win league and sections,” Hernandez said. “I hope we can dominate teams early so that we can coast into finals.”

Boys basketball won league Tuesday night following a 78-60 win over the Bella Vista broncos; now, they will face the Ponderosa bruins in round one of playoffs. The tigers also accomplished winning 10 games in league. Senior Jalyn Solich is proud of his team for their success in league, and now looks forward to playoffs.

“We were all really excited and now with ten wins we can go into playoffs with some confidence,” Solich said. “I want this season to last as long as possible so I really hope we can win out in playoffs.”

This week, both girls soccer and boys basketball will play in the first round of playoffs.
