91st Academy Award Nominees Announced

AJ WELKER

Oscar Nominations dropped this morning, with a familiar batch of films snagging spots in the most sought after categories.

Between the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards and the Producers Guild Awards, though similar movies have been nominated, each awards show has had a different film take home the trophy for best picture (Bohemian Rhapsody, Roma and Green Book, respectively.)

The Favourite boasts an impressive amount of Oscar nominations at ten, but it has lost for best picture on three separate occasions, with only Olivia Coleman picking up a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture.

Though Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone are nominated for an Oscar and have continuously been nominated throughout awards season, neither have won any of the major awards. (Weisz did, however take home a British Independent Film Award for her work in the film)

Black Panther made history by being the first superhero movie nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. The film is nominated in seven categories, including Best Original Song and Best Original Score, but no Best Actor or Best Actress nominations were awarded to the film, making a Best Picture win for Black Panther unlikely.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse continues to dominate in the Best Animated Feature Category, winning a Golden Globe, a Critics Choice Award, and a Producers Guild Award, as well as snagging an Oscar nomination. Though other nominees include fan favorite The Incredibles 2 and the charming, sarcastic, bone-dry humor of Isle of Dogs, nothing seems to be able to compete with Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

The Oscars are February 24th, at 5 PM PST, and in the absence of Kevin Hart, currently has no host.
