Anti LGBTQ+ protester makes appearance at RHS
August 25, 2018
Since last Monday, an anti LGBTQ+ rights protester has made appearances in front of RHS. According to youth resource officer Marc Kelley, he is protesting on public grounds and is protected by the first amendment.
Kelley aims to ensure interactions between the students and protester remain civil.
“He has the right to go and state his piece and what he thinks is right, and our students have the right to also say what they feel is right,” Kelley said. “We’re there to keep the peace and make sure it doesn’t end up going into any kind of physical altercation or any crimes committed.”
Junior Summer Edon engaged verbally with the protester.
“I was enraged because [the LGBTQ+ community] is something I’m super passionate about, and this is my school and I want to feel safe at my school,” Edon said. “With him here that’s not what I’m feeling. I’m feeling like I’m being attacked at my own school. Here we’re being taught tolerance and him protesting is not what we’re learning.”
The protester has made appearances at other sites, including Rocklin and Del Campo.
