Cancellation of Sadie Hawkins dance unfair for buyers

Roseville High School decided to bring back the Sadie Hawkins dance this year, and it is isn’t going too well. It’s doing so poorly that they actually might cancel it days before it’s set to take place due to lack of ticket sales.

I have barely heard anyone talk about Sadie Hawkins. This dance simply does not seem very popular. Unlike Homecoming, Casaba, and some of the other big events, the buzz about Sadie Hawkins has definitely been on the quiet side.

However, if the school actually does cancel the dance, then people have lost a lot of money. I’m not saying that the school isn’t going to refund everyone who bought tickets, but there are people who bought props and clothing for costumes that they won’t have the opportunity to wear anymore. That also leaves their Friday night open with nothing to do and no plans with friends.

The intended theme for the dance is “dynamic duo” which means that if you want to participate in this theme, you need a partner. A lot of people here at the school may not be in a relationship with someone with whom they can go to the dance. When I heard what the theme was, I wasn’t very happy that, if I wanted to participate in it, I had to create either a couple or best friend costume and go as part of a duo.

The concept behind Sadie Hawkins is that the girls ask the guys. I have to say that I love the idea of girls asking guys, but as a single girl I wouldn’t usually have the courage to ask my crush to the dance. It might sound sad but it’s true, making it more difficult for me to participate in that aspect.

One thing that I do like about Sadies is that the boxes are set to come back. Many people dislike the boxes, but I think that they can be very fun if a little dangerous. At previous dances that had boxes, people would overly crowd around them, resulting in students either getting stepped on or pushed off.

Nevertheless, Sadie Hawkins would be very fun to go to. Years have passed since Roseville High School last held this dance and I was pleased to hear it was coming back. Even though the theme could have been more inclusive, it is great for the people who are in relationships to dress up as a “dynamic duo” and go, and the dance being held inside with the boxes makes it even better. The school may have not sold enough tickets, but it was a good try and a nice prospect.
