Thanksgiving was more than just a day of eating and family for me – it was also a day of excitement as at midnight Amazon Prime Video released The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show. I counted down the minutes ‘till it’s release, even though I was hours away from home at my grandparents’ house with terrible internet. I event had to trudge through their mess of an office to reset the wireless access point to restart their Wi-Fi.

The effort was well worth it. With special guest appearances from famous singer-songwriters like James Corden, Lana Del Ray and Troye Sivan, there was no shortage of talent in the show. Christmas favorites like Let It Snow, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree keep the show classic, but Kacey and the featured artists throw a new spin on them.

In the show, Kacey is dealing with a drastic Christmas disaster – she’s lost the star topper for her Christmas tree. During her struggle to find it several other celebrities show up to her house to sing duets. Eventually, after seven duets and two solos, her Nana finally shows up all the way from Texas with a show stopping surprise.

On Spotify the album includes the interludes from the show itself which makes it hard to listen to cohesively if you’re looking for a pure Christmas album. The show is better watched on Amazon Prime, but if you throw the songs into a playlist by themselves they flow fairly well. When I first wrote this story, I included a line about the low probability of any of the songs from this show making it onto MIX96 any time soon, but the day after I wrote that sentence I heard Glittery on the Spotify Christmas Pop mix and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas at the Galleria, so I take back what I said.

While it may not be the Christmas album I was hoping for, The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show will certainly be on my list of annual watches around this time of year, right up there with Home Alone and Christmas Vacation.
