Joey Bada$$ attempts to Save the Children through music

CLAIRE OERTLEY

Joey Bada$$ is such a god.

The fact that he started out in the rap game so young and built his way up and still managed to go to college and educate the youth is one of my favorite things about him. He’s not just a rapper, he’s a master of inspiration and personally made me so happy throughout the years with each mixtape he posted.

Sadly, Joey Bada$$ hasn’t posted many new songs in 2016 but all the heat he dropped in 2015 keeps me going. To top it off he has been going to various colleges and speaking in front of classes giving insight and inspiration. This is one of the many reasons Joey Bada$$ stands out from most rappers: he truly wants to make a difference and help inspire the youth, he wants to Save the Children.

Joey’s first ever mixtape, 1999, is still one of my favorite mixtapes of all time. Capital Steez’s voice throughout the mixtape reminds me of how young they were when they first came up and how much Pro Era as a whole has evolved over time.

The overall upbeat and blissful vibe of 1999 is part of the reason that I find it to be so timeless. Even four years after it dropped, I can listen to it from start to finish and still find my soul more enlightened and happy with each song I listen to. It seems more innocent than more recent mixtapes or single tracks, you can tell the difference between Joey’s music before and after Cap Steez passed away.

The songs that Joey Bada$$ and Capital Steez made together will forever be my favorites, like Survival Tactics and Killuminati. Survival Tactics is such an iconic slapper, I can rap every line word for word and just get so hyped up to it every time I hear the beginning instrumentals. One line in particular actually helped me in chemistry, “protons and electrons homie that’s an a-bomb,” which reminded me that protons and electrons were always the same.

The entire lyrical style of Pro Era is so original and they incorporate lots of allusions which are usually the best type of lyrics in my opinion. I like being able to make connections between a rapper and other things that are relevant to my life- it just makes the whole song more enjoyable.

One of my all time favorite songs is World Domination which starts out with a segment from Pinky & The Brain which speaks to fans of the old cartoon and then goes into an upbeat song about World Domination. My twitter bio has been “world domination” for years because this song speaks to me so much, I truly couldn’t see my bio as anything else. I LOVE THIS SONG.

Other songs by Joey Bada$$ such as Pennyroyal and Silent Night are more of sad love songs which I personally would listen to on repeat when going through a breakup. The versatility of song genres by Joey Bada$$ make him appeal to just about anyone. This Feelin’ is more of a cute love song that literally warms my heart every time I hear it. It’s so cute and the beat is even cuter. If I could date a song, it would be This Feelin’.

Not only are Joey Bada$$’s songs really well written and rapped, but the music videos for select songs really help to envision what Joey Bada$$ wanted his fans to think of during his songs. The music video to No. 99 was the first one by him I’d ever watched and it was so enticing and original, starting out as a newscast who’s looking for Badmon who causes havoc against “the supremacy”. This is Joey Bada$$ speaking on controversial issues of government abuse and moderate conspiracy.

Overall, Joey Bada$$ has helped me to open my third eye and keep me woke. I will always look up to Jozif Badmon and what he’s created for his fans and family. The bond between him and his pros are what I look for in my life.
